German Shepherds

Description: The German Shepherd Dog is a strong, agile, well muscled dog, alert and full of life. He is extremely intelligent and makes a wonderful companion. The German Shepherd is easy to train and works well as a police guide, or a search and rescue
dog. They are a breed that will truly bonded to a family.

Westys

Description: The Westy is a small well-balanced cuerly hair looking dog. They are beautiful looking with their shiny white coat and bright button eyes. They are also intelligent dogs who learn very quickly. They love to play with their family. Thier size makes them great for an apartment but they are just at home in the country. A great companion for children of all ages. They are one of the most popular dog breed today.

Pugs

Description: The Pug is a stubby and muscular dog with a wide chest. They received their name Pug from the Latin word that means "clenched fist". To communicate with people they make grunting noises, somewhat like a pig. It is also hard for them to breathe because of their nose. They are very kind and are fairly easy to trian. Over all these dogs are really great.

Golden Retrievers

Description: Golden Retrievers are powerful, active, and well balanced. They possesses a personality that is eager, alert and self-confident. A companion, family pet, and an excellent guide or service dog. Gentle with children, they enjoy the endless attention children provide. Goldens love to swim and should be allowed to do so whenever possible. Though he will adapt well to a kennel environment. They need human companionship and a lot of love. They are also great at hunting.

Huskys

Description: The Siberian Husky has a sweet nature and is a breed who is suited for the whole family, but they do not make a good guard dog. Gentle in character with a determined look they are a very people oriented dog. Males have a tendency to roam and need to be kept in a fenced in area. Siberian Huskys are strong and have the ability to haul heavy loads over long distances and rough terrain. They will happily pull a young child in a wagon or sled.

Poodle

Description: The Poodle is a dog who is a perfect pet for a less active person who has time to pamper this natural clown and be amused by his quaint antics. They are bright, perky dogs who are easy to train and eager to please.

Rottweiler

Description: The Rottweiler is a medium-large, powerful dog. The Rottweiler is a working dog, they are the happiest when there is a job to do whether it is herding, competing in obedience, tracking, search and rescue or retrieving the newspaper. He is an effective guard dog, but needs firm handling and proper training. An inexperienced owner should not consider this breed.

Cairn Terrier

Description: The Cairn Terrier is an active, small working terrier. they are free in movement, strong, but not heavily built. His head is shorter and wider than any other terriers and well furnished with hair giving a general foxy expression. they are a wonderful family dog, but will always remember his ancestry as a "sporting terrier". they make a very active, inquisitive and "ready to go" dog. they are a great dog for the house and are very good with children. Energetic and always on the watch, he will alert you to the presence of strangers by growling.

Jack Russell Terrier

Description: The Jack Russell Terrier is a small, brave terrier, who is good at hunting small animals like foxes and raccoons. Like other terriers they may get bored easily and are capable of inventing his/her own entertainment. they are tough little dogs who are clean and a convenient size for a companion.

Akita

Description: The Akita is large, powerful,and alert, with much substance and heavy bone. He has a deep muzzle, small eyes and erect ears, and a large curled tail. Renown for his fierce love, loyalty and obedience to their owners. they are the largest of the Japanese Spitz-type breeds. Akitas have webbed feet and are very strong swimmers. Akitas need space and should not be confined.

Bulldog

Description: Known as the national symbol of Great Britain. An ideal pet as he loves to be in the company of his family. He adores children and make an excellent companion to them because of their gentle, sometimes stubborn nature. they are a laid-back, loyal good natured and undemanding companion. They also make good watchdogs.

Beagle

Description: The Beagle has soft brown eyes that betray their warm personality but do not reveal his admirable courage and stamina. A truly trustworthy friend can be found in them makes a great family pet as he is eager to romp and play. A good watchdog he can be trained to hunt. He will adapt well to a home or kennel environment, but new owners should be aware of natural hunting instincts and he should not be left alone for long periods of time or else he might make trouble. Beagles are also extremely friendly to people, especially strangers(that includes young children).

Shih Tzu

Description: The name "Shih Tzu" means lion dog in Chinese and they received the name because of their long, flowing mane-like coat. The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, toy dog with long flowing double coat. they may display an arrogant personality, but is actually playful and gentle. they adapt well to any family situation and will enjoy a cuddle in your lap, doing tricks, or fetching a tennis ball.

Greyhound
Description:The Greyhound is the fastest dog in the world, researching speeds of over 40 miles per hour, commonly used in the sport of dog racing. This is an ancient breed, believed to have descended from the Arabian Sloughi and brought to England by traders long before 900 AD. The Greyhound was used long ago for hunting deer and wild board. This breed does not get along well with smaller, non-canine animals, especially rabbits and cats.

Border Terriers
Description:Originating near the border of Scotland and England in the Cheviot Hills area, the Border Terrier was bred to be a farm worker. Their primary function was to drive fox from their den and kill them. They were also used to hunt otter, badger, and marten. Today the Border Terrier is relatively rare in the United States but is a highly regarded companion and continues to be utilized as a vermin hunter on farms.

Feeding your dog the right stuff is almost important as feeding your dog. These steps will show you how to feed, how much to feed, and when to feed.

STEP 1
ask your local vet what he thinks is the best brand (personaly i recommend iams).then ask him theses two question. :soft or hard
:what brand

STEP 2
you can't just go and buy the brand then you'll need to find the brand of dog food your looking for then find the bag that would best fit your dog.

STEP 3
once taken home then you must decide how often to feed your dog a day, but never leave the food in the bowl all day make specific time to feed them (two or three times a day).

STEP 4
then look on the bag to find a chart that will tell you how to feed your dog all together in one day.

STEP 5
your done now just feed your dog every day and be sure to let your dog out to go to the bathroom after they eat.

Important Vet Definitions

Veterinarian: a doctor who diagnoses and treats injuries, diseases, and disorders of animals.

Veterinarian Technician (nurse): a person trained to assist a veterinarian with everything from medical and surgical procedures to anesthesiology and lab tests. Most states require that technicians pass an exam to become certified, licensed, or registered to practice.

These definitions will be in alphabetical order:

Abdomen: the belly area between the chest and the pelvis.

Activated Charcoal: an antidote used to soak up poisons from the stomach and intestines.

Acute illness: an illness that develops suddenly and severely.

Acupuncture: the Chinese technique of inserting sterile needles at specific points in the body to treat pain and other medical conditions.

Anorexia: loss of appetite in an animal.

Anesthesia: loss of sensation of feeling. Doctors induce it with drugs during surgery to prevent animals from feeling pain.

Anesthesiologist: a veterinarian specialist who administers medicines that relieve pain in animals, especially during surgery.

Arrhythmia: an abnormal heart rhythm.

Biology: the study of living organisms.

Biopsy: removal of tissue from an animal for examination under a microscope.

Blood Pressure: a measurement of how well blood is moving through an animals body.

Bloat: (see GDV) (bloat is another name for GDV)

Canine: related to dogs.

Cardiologist: a veterinarian who treats heart related problems in animals.

Cataract: a cloudiness of the lens of the eye that reduces vision.

Chronic illness: an illness that lasts for a long time, such as diabetes or asthma.

Colostrum: a fluid rich in antibodies that some animals produce just before and after giving birth. It's followed by milk production.

CPR: cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Crash cart: a cabinet containing all the equipment necessary to treat an animal whose heart stops beating.

CT (CAT) Scan: a computerized x-ray that allows vets to view cross sections of an animal's body in detail.

Defibrillator: machine that sends an electrical shock through an animal's chest to jolt its heart back to a normal rhythm.

Dermatologist: a veterinarian who diagnoses and treats animals skin ailments, including allergies.

Electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) Machine: an instrument that records the electrical signals from an animal's heart and charts them on a graph. It's used to identify and monitor heart problems.

Endoscopy: a procedure that allows vets to look inside an animal's body using tiny cameras on tubes. It enables them to take biopsies of tissue and remove foreign bodies without surgery.

Endotracheal Tube: a tube inserted into an animal's trachea (windpipe) to help it breathe.

Exotics: a branch of veterinarian medicine that treats animals such as birds, reptiles, and pocket pets (hamsters, rabbits, chinchillas).

Foreign Body: an abnormal object or substance in an animal's body.

Fracture: a break in an animal's bone.

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV): a life-threatening condition i which a dog's stomach bloats (fills with air) and flips.

Internal medicine specialist: a veterinarian who treats complex illnesses involving the body's organs and systems, such as the liver, pancreas, and immune system.

Intravenous: entering the bloodstream through the vein..

Intravenous (IV) fluids: replacement body fluids given through a catheter (tube) placed in an animal's vein.

Magnetic Resonance Imagers (MRIs): machines that create three-dimensional pictures of body organs using computers and magnetic energy (8,000 times more powerful than the earth's magnetic field)

Neurologist: a veterinarian who diagnoses and treats nervous system disorders.

Oncologist: a veterinarian who treats cancers in animals.

Ophthalmologist: a veterinarian who diagnoses and treats eye disorders

Orthopedic Surgeon: a veterinarian who repairs injuries to animals bones and joints.

Pharmacist: a specialist who applies knowledge of drugs to animals and their unique characteristics and diseases.

Pneumothorax: a collapsed lung caused by air trapped in the space between an animal's lungs and chest wall, which interferes with breathing. Postoperactive Care: treatment after surgery

Packed Cell Volume (PCV): the percentage of the blood that's made of red blood cells.

Pathologist: a veterinarian who analyzes tissue, blood and other samples to help diagnose diseases.

Radiologist: a veterinarian who helps preform and assess, ultrasound, CT scans, and other ways of seeing inside the body.

Resident: a veterinarian seeking advanced training in a specialized area of medicine, such as emergency and critical care. Residencies generally run for three years.

Respiration: the act of breathing

Rounds: meetings of doctors, veterinarian students, interns, residents, and nurses to review and discuss cases.

Soft-Tissue Surgeon: a veterinarian who removes foreign objects and tumors from animals.

Stethoscope: a tool vets use to amplify and listen to sounds made by the heart, lungs, and intestines.

Toxic substance: anything that poisions or harms animals.

Triage: process by which an animal's medical condition is prioritized according to its severity.

Tumor: am abnormal mass of tissue that may or may not be cancerous.

Ultrasound: an imaging tool that uses soundwave technology to display an animal's internal organs.

Vital Signs: the signs of life: heart rate, breathing, body temerature, and blood pressure.

X-Ray (Radiograph): a diagnostic test that uses beams of electromagnetic energy to create images of animal bones and organs.

Zoology: the branch of biology that studies animals and animal life.

Cancer in Dogs:
This disease is rare but fatal in dogs and if you want to specialize in treating cancer in dogs you should consider going to Colorado State to get your college degree. Cancer in dogs affects the skin, bone, and other organs. Some are slow growing and some progress very rapidly. There are effective treatments for many types of cancers, and research is regularly identifying new ones. Early diagnosis has a significant effect on the success of treatment.

Infectious Diseases:
There are many types of infectious diseases in dogs and they can be caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Some of the infections can be fatal but not all of then are, so if your dog does get an infection dont worry just conntact your vet.

Metabolic & Hormonal (Endocrine) Disorders:

Endocrine glands produce hormones which affect many body processes. These processes can be severely affected, or death can occur, if a hormone is produced in too large or too small a quantity.

Digestive System:

Dog digestive system is a lot like humans, but the parts are aranged diffrently. The digestive system includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas.

Eyes:

Disorders of the eye can be congenital, infectious, neoplastic, traumatic, immunologic, or idiopathic (of unknown cause). Some have no health implications, others can cause blindness.

Heart & Respiratory Systems:

The heart and respiratory system are responsible for taking oxygen to all of the tissues of the body, and carrying carbon dioxide out of the body. They are very integrated: one cannot function without the other.

Immune & Blood Systems:

The immune system consists of lymph nodes, other organs, and many different types of cells. Learn more about the anatomy and function of the immune and lymphatic systems; red and white blood cells; and other components of blood in the dog.

Liver Disease in Dogs & the Canine Pancreas:

The liver and pancreas are two essential organs that have multiple functions. Both have ducts that secrete special chemicals into the intestine that aid in digestion. They are next to each other anatomically and a disease of one can sometimes affect the health of the other.

Skeletal & Nervous Systems & Muscles in Dogs:

How to House trainning your puppy

Starting Inside: There are several ways to housebreak a puppy. With the first, you can put down papers or pretreated pads, encouraging them to use these areas for going to the bathroom. The pads are scented with a chemical that attracts the puppy to use them. Whenever you see them starting into their "pre-potty pattern," such as walking around and sniffing the floor, you gently pick them up without talking and carry them over to the papers/pad and then praise them when they go to the bathroom (Rule 2).
When all goes well and they are using the papers consistently, the papers are either moved closer to the door and/or another set is placed outside. The transition is made from concentrating the toilet habits to one spot inside the home to one spot outside the home. Finally, the papers inside are eliminated. The only problem with this method is that for a period of time it encourages the animal to eliminate inside the home. In our experience, house training may take longer when this method is used.

When an 'accident' happens One of the key issues in housebreaking is to follow Rule Number One: If you do not catch your puppy doing it, then do not punish him for it! We do not care what someone else may tell you or what you read, if you find a mess that was left when you were not there, clean it up and forget it.
Discipline will not help because unless you catch the puppy in the act, he will have no idea what the scolding is for. Your puppy has urinated and defecated hundreds of times before he met you. Mom or the breeder always cleaned it up. Nobody made a fuss before and the pup will not put the punishment, regardless of its form, together with something he has done without incident numerous times before. Especially if he did it more than 30 seconds ago! Puppies are just like our children. Unless something was really fun (and a repetitious act like going to the bathroom is not), they are not thinking about what they did in the past. They are thinking about what they can do in the future. At this point in his life a puppy's memory is very, very poor.
Anyway, let us face it. It was your fault, not the pup's. If you had been watching, you would have noticed the puppy suddenly walking or running around in circles with his nose down smelling for the perfect spot to go to the bathroom. It is just as consistent as the taxi cab driver behind you honking immediately when the light changes. The puppy will show the same behavior every time. It may vary a little from pup to pup but they always show their own "pre-potty pattern" before the act.

The COME Command

My method of teaching 'come' to a puppy involves the use of a collar and a long leash or check cord. However, your puppy needs to become adjusted to the sensation of the collar and the effect of the leash. Do not start training until this is done. We prefer a leash or cord that is at least 15 ft. long. Also, choose a training time when there are no distractions.
Stand with the pup several feet from you and gently pull him toward you with the cord. As he reaches you, give praise by gently reaching down to pet him, rubbing him across the shoulders a few times. It may also help to kneel down in a crouched position to encourage the pup to come to you.
You don't need to say anything at all yet because saying 'come' will just be confusing to the pup at this point. In all training, I believe that a dog should know and understand the action demanded of a command before you ever add human language to it. Dogs don't understand our words. They can be taught to understand but it is not a natural or instinctive process for them. Repeat the pulling-in and praise a few more times. The first lesson should only be a few minutes long; a pup's attention span is short and we want the lessons to be a fun time between pup and owner.
After a few sessions, you will notice that the puppy comes easier and easier until the slightest tug on the cord starts the pup right toward you. This is exactly what we want. Giving treats is not necessary, but since this is such a difficult command for some dogs to learn, it may assist in training.
Once you are confident that the pup will start coming to you with the slightest pull on the cord, say 'come' at the same instant you start to pull on the cord. Just say it once and don't repeat yourself. Do not raise your voice. The pup will soon associate the action of 'come' with the verbal command. Repeat this process until the cord, although still attached to the collar, plays no part in bringing the puppy to you. Rather, the pup comes on his own as a response to the verbal command. At this point in the training, the cord can be removed. Working in a controlled area, the command can be given and the correct behavior rewarded with mild praise. There will be instances when the pup challenges your authority. Then it is time to go back to using the check cord for a period of time to refresh and remind your pup.
Be careful how you use spoken commands around your pup. For example, the pup probably won't even hear you as he runs across the neighbor's yard, playing with another dog. Screaming 'come-come-come' at a time like this only tells a pup that he can get away with disobeying your commands. Use common sense when using the command and make sure the puppy always obeys. Also be sure that all family members use the same word for the same command. One person can't be saying 'here,' another saying 'come here Ralph,' and yet another 'over here' and expect the puppy to understand and obey.
'Come' is the most important command you'll ever teach your dog. It could save your dog's life. You and everyone around you will appreciate a dog that is obedient and under control.

Intro

This is a easy to follow dog guide no hard to do direction just have fun with it. Please comment if something did not work so that I can fix the problem. I hope it will help you enjoy.

Care Tips

First you must truly get to know your dog.

Second if your dog looks like it needs something you should try to care for it as soon as possible.

Third you will need a variety of of pet supplies in order to care for your dog. You can buy them at your local pet store.

Dogs love to go for walks. It's good to walk your dog at least once a day. The more you walk them the farther they will go.

Try sometimes to change their diet. Kibble sometimes gets boring, so give them other choices. But let your vet approve this and make sure if your dog is an adult don't feed them puppy food.

Not All Fun and Games

Having a dog is not all fun it takes lots of responsibility.It can also include some annoying times. Here are some things you might or will encounter while having a dog.
